Gardening: Flowers Brings Color To Life

Gardening is an art that human beings indulge in mainly due to the aesthetic property of the same. Right from the beginning of time, since the Garden of Eden, the term and its definite connotation is with us. Gardening is the art of making and maintaining a garden. So what essentially is a garden?

What is a garden?

We generally apply the term garden to a landscape in which multiple flowers are present and have been planted and take care of. However, it is not always necessary that a garden always be one which has flowers in it. In fact any artificial landscape created by humans containing plants, flowering or non-flowering, can be termed a garden. Therefore, if you have a vegetable patch behind your kitchen then it can also be termed a garden, an organic garden per se.

Most gardens are generally situated at ground level, in the open. However, with the increasing paucity of space all over the world, gardens have made the terraces of buildings, the verandahs of flats as well as wide jars and shallow saucers their abode. Today, you can have a garden almost anywhere, may it be a beer can or an acre wide of land. As such, gardening has been divided into three categories: indoor gardening, water gardening and outdoor gardening

Indoor gardening

As the name implies, indoor gardening deals with gardens that are situated within our houses. Such gardens are usually maintained by people who do not have a lot of space around their homes or have to live in stuffy little flats but still harbor the desire of seeing some plants around them. But, this is always not true because there are people who create gardens within their homes so as to make it a space of cooling and relaxation of the mind.

Water gardening

Many such indoor lavish gardens are made around small areas of water. However, creating ponds with water plants in them essentially falls under water gardening. Within the same space you can easily have a water garden and an indoor garden just by lacing the banks of the water body with the plants of your choice. You may want to grow lilies or lotuses or even the very common water hyacinth. Other than these there are also present a variety of exotic water plants which you can try and plant in your water garden.

Outdoor gardening

This is the most common amongst all the three types of gardening available to us. Also, this form of gardening is the most ancient because water gardening developed later and indoor gardening only after urbanization. In earlier times, gardening was something that people indulged in as a luxury; we can always associate stories of various outdoor gardens with the era of kings and princes and especially with King Solomon. Flowers were the most common things that these gardens used to abound in.

Today, gardening has transformed from being a mere passion to a profession. With the advent of technology, varieties of tools and implements have been designed for the well keeping of the garden, shearing and pruning of plants as well as tilling of the soil as and when necessary. Also, pest control and infection control have come to play a very big part in gardening.

Occasionally plants need to be sprayed etc to keep them healthy and free of infestation. Alongside this, genetic engineering as well as grafting have become highly specialized branches of gardening. Also, landscaping, beautification and arranging into different patterns has attained importance like never before. To a certain class of people, it is even a show of status and culture while in certain cultures it is a sacred art.
